Unit Topic: Expressing Who We Are
Lesson Topic: The Canadian Broadcasting Company
Grade Level: 9
Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
Major Concepts/generalizations/Understandings:
That the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) is an integral part of Canadian Culture
That the CBC plays a major role in maintaining and protecting Canadian Culture
That the CBC has an obligation to serve Canada and all of its citizens
Learning Objectives/Outcomes
1. Students will identify the ways in which the Canadian government regulates Canadian Media (knowledge)
2. Students will show an understanding of how and why the CBC was created (knowledge)
3. Students will identify the ways the CBC maintains/preserves Canadian culture (knowledge)
4. Students will be show an understanding of the difficulties the CBC faces today (knowledge)
5. Students will record and post their “Reimagine CBC”on YouTube (skill)
6. Students will appreciate the CBC’s role in preserving Canadian Culture (attitude)

CBC Weekly Schedule (Morning, Afternoon, Evening)
Lesson Procedures:
Lesson Introduction (Activating Strategies)– Video and Mind Map Strategy (15 Minutes)
Show YouTube Video “CBC’s 75th Anniversary Special” using the Smartboard (3.5 mins)
On the Smartboard, begin the Mind Map with “CBC” in the middle
Activate students’ prior knowledge by asking questions such as: “What do you know about the CBC? What are some ways the CBC reflects Canadian Culture? Who owns the CBC?
Write responses on the Smartboard and help guide students to key concepts and examples
Development (Acquiring Strategies) 35 Minutes.
Assign specific sections from the Broadcasting Act to be read aloud by students
Divide class into groups of 3, labeling them #1’s, #2’s, #3’s. Handout the three different (morning, afternoon, evening) CBC weekly schedules (one to each member of the
group.)
Next, class members with the same section group together.
The question for each group: “Based on what you have learned about the CBC and its roles, do these programs reflect and preserve Canadian Culture?”
Teacher will probe and add to the discussion as necessary and write important ideas/points on the Smartboard as notes for the students.
Closing: 10 Minutes
Show YouTube Video: “Reimagine CBC” using the Smartboard
Teacher and students will discuss what Reimagine CBC is about, and as a project students will film their own “Reimagine CBC” and post it on YouTube.
